Toluene, also known as toluol, is a colourless, water-insoluble chemical solvent. It has an aromatic type smell associated with thinners and is highly volatile. It is a flammable liquid with a flashpoint of 4°C and is widely used as a solvent and an industrial feedstock. The main use is to make benzene, xylene and other solvents. As a solvent toluene is a raw material for thinners, paints, inks, adhesives, resins and cleaning agents.
