Phthalic anhydride (PA) is the organic compound with the formula C6H4(CO)2O. It is the anhydride of phthalic acid. PA is a colorless solid. It can undergo hydrolysis and alcoholysis. PA is being used in the manufacture of phthalate esters, which are widely used plasticizers, as a precursor to many reagents in organic synthesis, and in the production of certain dyes.
