Methanol (also known as methyl alcohol; monohydroxymethane; methyl hydroxide and wood alcohol) is a clear, colourless liquid which has a mild, characteristic alcohol odour. It is soluble in water and is also soluble in other alcohols, ketones, esters, ethers, and in most other organic solvents. Methanol has the chemical formula CH3OH. It acquired the name wood alcohol because methanol was once produced chiefly as a byproduct of the destructive distillation of wood. Today, industrial methanol is produced in a catalytic process directly from carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen.
